Working with Stamats, I designed this brochure for Ramapo College of New Jersey as a part of their advancement efforts. This piece emphasizes the liberal arts education at Ramapo, connecting personal and professional, theory and practice. Current donors and alumni are spotlighted, detailing how monetary contributions have impacted recent additions, updates, and consequently, the students' experiences. Awarded Best of Category in Public Service at the 44th Annual ADDY Awards in Cedar Rapids/Iowa City. Produced in conjunction with Stamats, Inc. Copywriter: Joan Benson. Director of Creative Services: Kevin Mellen.
26 pages with fold-outs, 8” x 10". 2011.

From November '10 through November '11, I served as the sole designer for Little Village—a free alt mag here in Iowa City. Each month we would put out a 40-page publication packed with local writing on art, culture, news and more.

Public Space One is a progressive non-profit art space in Iowa City run by artists, musicians, performers, writers, activists and volunteers. They host a huge range of events in their space and it was that very diversity that was cluttering their last web presence when we first met. Together we streamlined their mission to not only better communicate all they do, but to also have a clearer understanding of their own goals and needs. Programming by Michael Courier.

Heath Schultz and I teamed up to design a written work—Garden Valley by April Freely—for the award-winning arts and literary publication, Ninth Letter. Freely’s non-traditional style of writing encouraged us to let the story live outside the magazine as a supplemental piece which could be folded out and read in one continuous scroll. Her use of language in connection with place led us to be inspired by both letterpress techniques and psychogeographical maps.
5 pages, 10” × 32.5” unfolded. 2009.

Dismantling the Magical Clock by S.P. Tenhoff
Two pieces—from Maaza Mengiste and S.P. Tenhoff—were designed for the award-winning arts and literary publication, Ninth Letter. In collaboration with Clint Miceli, we highlighted Mengiste’s piece by focusing on the themes of nostalgia and uncertainty through photographs. For Tenhoff’s fictional writing, we created child-like drawings that were captured to blur the line between reality and fantasy.

In 2011 I worked with Kevin Mellen and Cary Jordan from Stamats, Inc. on developing a new branding initiative for MidAmerica Nazarene University. The MNU experience is one that not only includes challenging academic programs, but encourages a holistic way of life and learning—one that is committed to faith, service, innovation and fostering relationships among peers, faculty and the community.

We helped solidify and tighten their messaging along with establishing a new identity standards manual—including guidelines for logo usage, typography, color, photography, copy and more—that would help maintain consistency across campus. Months later, we were again enlisted to help produce multiple publications which I designed with copy from writer Dave Krause. Produced in conjunction with Stamats, Inc.

As a contribution to Ninth Letter’s Where We’re At podcasts, Adam Law and I conducted and edited an interview with members of the Chicago Neo-Futurists about their show Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind. As the longest running show in Chicago, every week they attempt to do 30 plays in 60 minutes with great help from the audience.

I designed the cover and interior of Deep Routes, the latest book from the Compass Collaborators. "Raven Steals the Pipeline" cover art by Duskin Drum. From their site (where you can also buy the book!):

Deep Routes: the Midwest in All Directions is a collection of stories about learning where we are—by inhabiting, traversing, and exchanging narratives in the expansive region that some people call the Midwest Radical Culture Corridor. Emerging from a geologic territory shaped by retreating Pleistocene ice sheets and further carved by generations of plant, animal and human habitation, these essays contemplate another planetary shift that has transformed our very existence: global neoliberal capitalism. The authors critically reflect on the nature of territory, citizenship, mobility and the possibilities for a more just and egalitarian society. Drawing from sites within the the Midwest (such as parts of Minneapolis, Detroit, Rockford, Madison, Southern Illinois) and excursions far beyond it (locales as distant as Togo, China and Argentina) the twenty-seven contributors explore the wealth of associations these many journeys have nurtured.

Mount Mercy University in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, was in need of a piece for potential undergraduates to best represent who they are and what the MMU experience can be. This was one out of two concepts presented that portrays the kind of active, experiential education students can expect that is rooted in both passion and academic rigor. Copywriter: Joan Benson. Produced in conjunction with Stamats, Inc.
