Radiation Limit
Artist Sarah Kanouse created a proposal
for a
memorial project to commemorate the human radiation experiments funded by the Atomic Energy
Commission during the Cold War. Part of the project consisted of
re-landscaping the Dept. of
Energy lawn with spiderwort flowers—whose blue stamens turn pink in the presence
of radiation.
Contact microphones buried beneath the plants would pick up vibrations of footsteps and passing traffic,
which would be converted to sound and broadcast to the surrounding area via radio. Read and see
